Working in an industry where businesses are routinely assessed for feasibility, it has become more and more apparent to me that entreprenuers are extraordinary beings who have in them a creative seed that can change the way the world works.

But sometimes, rather tragically, the greatest idea can fail because the nuts and bolts of the foundation are not quite right. Small things like failing to be considered for contract because you perhaps do not meet the criteria. How you house your idea can change that instantly. Understanding the tax consenquences of a large personal payment versus a payment to your private company can save you a pretty penny. Tax on a R100 000 in your hands can go up to R45 000. Tax in a company goes up to R28 000. And remember how a trust used to be cheaper? It’s not anymore. Even more importantly, the legal impact of losses in a company versus in your personal name. The considerations are many.

For the registration of a new company and its registration with the South African Revenue Service for tax purposes, a nominal fee of R1500 will be charged to cover disbursements and the very bare minimum of costs.
